You know you are an artist,
but does your art career know it's a business?
Or are you so focused on studio time that, as much as you want to
hear ca ching!, you aren't really sure how to put the buzz into the biz?
You love what you do. And your highest priority is producing
great art. Business planning, on the other hand, feels dull,
confusing, and just not who you are. Is it possible for a
business plan to make sense to an artist and even be fun?
Oh dear, do you cringe when you hear the words business plan?
Or maybe even worse… budget, cash flow or profit and loss statement?
If you're like most artists I know, these terms make your skin crawl.
In fact, the whole idea of a business plan is a serious downer.
First off, they are full of yawn-inspiring sections such as: the boring executive summary,
the flat company description, the incomprehensible industry analysis, the brutal sounding
"target" market, the "hide-under-the-bed" financials, and the Fifth Avenue marketing and sales plan.
But what if you weren't an artist, and owned a deli instead? Or an appliance store?
Wouldn't it be pretty obvious that the first order of business would have to be a business plan?
Business plans are the staple of an solopreneur's life. And you, dear artist,
are a solopreneur. On your own, crashing through the underbrush of survival.
You Know You Can't Ignore This.
Your business plan is vital to nailing down where you're going, and what
you must have to get there. Sure you can keep flying by the seat of your pants.
But why live with so much uncertainty and things that go boo in the night?
In truth, an effective business plan is your North Star, guiding you
and your art toward ever expanding levels of success.
So imagine what it would be like if you could approach this business plan,
that you must have, from a visual, creative and fun perspective instead?
You are in luck!
Enter Jennifer Lee, Certified Coach and Artist
Like you, Jennifer couldn't stand the idea of a business plan,
at least not the traditional variety. She wanted her plan to be
effective, workable, and as juicy as her creative spirit could imagine.
Then one day, after taking part in an "Art Every Day Month" challenge,
a creative spark caught fire, and…
Her Right-Brain Business Plan Was Born
Now, Jennifer has teamed up with smARTist founder and art-career coach,
Ariane Goodwin, Ed.D., and they have created a six-week Teleclass
just for you: The Right-Brain Business Plan For Artists.
At Last, Business Planning Your Right Brain Will Love
In just six weeks, this Teleclass will help you think through and
execute everything you need in a more inspiring, engaging
and accessible way, so you end up with a 100% complete business plan!
“The Right-Brain Business Plan really worked the way I work - out of the box! - it took the chore out of making my business vision real and gave me the skills to take my vision into the world with more clarity, depth, confidence and excitement! The whole process kept me engaged, challenged and motivated (which is no easy feat!). Who knew creating a business plan could be so fun and simple! Most importantly, Ms. Lee understands the way my creative/non-traditional brain works and really set me up to succeed. It felt like she created the Right-Brain Business Plan just for me!" —Grif Sadow, CPCC, ACC Personal & Professional Life and Leadership Coach
In fact, this six-week Teleclass is perfect for you if…
- You already have a business plan, but you need to breathe new life into it
- You don't have a business plan and you need one, but slogging thru a mosquito swamp sounds more appealing
- You aren't sure what to put in it (Aunt Nellie's brooch?), and what to leave out (that hunk of marble in the corner)
- You've never been too crazy about spreadsheets
- Numbers numb you out
- You'd consider drowning an executive summary in salsa before you'd read one all the way through
- AND… you'd be a whole lot happier to have a creative approach to the practical planning of your business (for a change!)
Where my business was, and where it is now, has changed dramatically due to Ariane's talent in directing, working with me on ideas, and her ability to help build foundations! She is sensitive to priorities, overload, and has helped me be less anxious and find balance. As for character, I love her honest, direct nature. She's quick, on the ball, listens, and is always there for suggestions or even a good laugh! I get excited knowing how much I've accomplished in such a short time. To sum it up…she is the best investment I ever made! —G. Dalsgaard, glass artist

3 Things That Really Grabbed Me
1. Business Plan as a Road Map: I love the analogy of a map and how not having a map leads to veering off course and lots of wasted time. As a commissioned portrait artist, I KNOW the steps I need to be taking to get myself out there, in front of the right people, expanding my business and, ultimately, creating and living the life of my artist dreams. I've been wanting to create a business plan because I know that putting the elements down "in writing" (target market, branding, marketing, finances, etc.) will propel me forward into action in those areas, maximizing use (really, minimizing waste) of my time. However, the writing part, well...YUCK! Which leads to...
2. Business Plan as Art: Unless there is some creativity involved, putting anything down in writing is either too hard or just too darned boring! I wanted to run, shrieking with JOY around my house (but didn't, in case it got picked up on the call!) when I heard Jennifer talking about the business plan MOBILE and especially the business plan LEATHER BRACELET!!!!! It sparked the EXACT format that I want to do mine in so that it will actually be BE portraiture AND will also allow for constant updating!!!!! WOO-HOO!!!!!!!! How cool is that??? I'm so excited about it, that I want to start IMMEDIATELY (big change from dreading and avoiding!), but I'm going to wait for the kick-off next week and work on my house & studio this week. (I swear, I am DROOLING over my future "Portrait Business Plan / Art on the Wall / Living "Document"!!!!!!) And I am SOOOOOO looking forward to photographing it and sharing it with the group. Oh, yeah, Baby!
3. Business Plan Supportive Community: When you shared about the artists generously sharing resources, even one you'd never heard of or considered, I just HAD to participate! I actually LOVE business and I love sharing resources! I also know that there will be times during the program when I'll start to drag my feet, and I know that I'll be able to find the motivation, energy and creative boost I'm looking for within our online community. You really expressed the "good vibrations" component beautifully. :-)
And I guess what I would say to those artists who are still sitting on the fence:
- Trust the coaches to provide excellent, relevant information. You're in good hands.
- Trust your own intelligence and creativity. You WILL be able to make it uniquely yours, and put it to good use.
- Trust the community. We are all in this together, and everything you could possibly want or need is just an email, a posting or a phone call away.
—Rena Tucker
What You Need For Results
- Showing up… coming to the calls, sending in your assignments, and using the forum, without these basics not much else will work.
- Curiosity… Business planning is a learned skill. If you bring the intention, curiosity & commitment to each week, we'll bring the tips and tools to get you there.
- Sincere questions and feedback… real learning happens on both sides of the fence. We are hear to listen to your experience even as we share ours.
Lauren Brownstein wrote the details of her plan on the back of her collage plates, then made a mobile!

Working with Ariane Goodwin has been a wonderful and enlightening surprise. She offers the best of everything: a creative organic process, insight, clarity, compassion, humor, and a razor edge listening skill that doesn't miss a single important nuance. I was challenged creatively, spiritually and pragmatically. And I've already recommended her to three more people. —Raquel Ortiz
A Reality Check
A well thought out business plan saves you money, pure and simple.
Being a self-supporting artist is no picnic. Not only do you have to produce the art,
you have to find someone to buy it. Like it or not, you're in business for yourself. And
no business gets very far on fun and fumes. If you're going to drive this buggy, you
better fill it up first.
Before you spend your hard earned dollars on supplies, business cards, brochures,
and websites, it pays to know what you are doing and why. This keeps more money
in your pocket and fewer break downs on the side of the road.
If You're Tempted To Drag Your Heels
The cost of this course is the lowest you'll see. The next time this course comes around, the cost will inevitably increase. Growing a business, even slowly and minimally, takes money, so if paying for this course breaks the budget, please wait and save up.
But if this investment just stretches you, and you need a business plan (new or renewed), then go for it. The Right Brain Business Plan is serious, and effective (probably even infectious) fun. (Just check out those paper plates!)
Our Whole Brain Guarantee
We want everyone who takes this Teleclass to end up with a practical and inspiring business plan that shows exactly how an art career can soar.
Of course, we can't snap our fingers to make it happen. But you can, and we'll support you in making this investment of time and energy by backing the class up with our Whole Brain Guarantee.
This guarantee is meant to support your commitment and back up your results. We guarantee that you will come out with a detailed business plan tailored to your situation, as long as you do three things:
- Come to at least 5 of the 6 live sessions
- Complete and send in at least 5 of the 6 sets of homework
- Give a response to at least two other class participants in the online forum every week.
If you do these three simple things, and still do not have a business plan at the end of the course, we will refund 100% of your investment.

How does a teleclass work?
A teleclass meets on a telephone bridgeline, a cool technology that lets groups of people meet by phone. You can both listen and talk, if the instructor doesn't put everyone on mute. There are no conference operators and no special charges for using this service. You may incur long distance charges if it is a long distance call for you.
To join a call, you will dial a US number shortly before class time. The system will ask you to enter a bridge number or PIN code. Then you will be connected to the class. If you come on the line before the class instructors, you may hear silence or interact with other participants who are also waiting for the instructors to arrive. All phone numbers and PINs will be emailed to you as soon as you register. Back to FAQ
Is there a hard copy of the notes?
Yes. At the end of the course we can collect the notes for all six sessions and have them printed and bound for you in a single volume. There will be an additional charge of $25 plus shipping. Back to FAQ
Are there recordings on CDs?
Yes. If you register for the premium option, we will make CDs of the classes and mail them to you. There will be an additional charge of $50 plus shipping. Back to FAQ
What if I can't attend the course and wish to cancel?
The course registration fee is non refundable. But, if you can't attend, you can transfer your seat to another person. Back to FAQ
What kind of support is there?
We've created 3 levels of support.
1. Access to our private online forum. You can post questions and ask for help, at your convenience. We generally respond within one business day. Also, it's not unusual for participants get great support from each other. The course is designed for both horizontal (peer-to-peer) and vertical (instructor to participant) learning.
2. Feedback on questions and assignments, on the forum and in class, from your two coaches, as well as learning from others in the class.
3. When you select the Premium option, you get a followup teleclass. This helps keep you on track, answers questions that come up afterward, and supports your motivation from the course.
What happens if I miss a class?
Coming to the live class will give you the best results. If you know ahead of time that you can’t make at least 5 classes, it may be better to wait until the course comes around again. If there is an emergency and you are unable to attend a session, you can listen to the recording. Back to FAQ
Are there hidden costs?
In addition to the course fee, you may want to budget for:
- Long distance charges to a USA area code.
- Cost of class audio on CDs (optional)
- Cost of printed and bound workbook (optional)
Do I pay for long-distance calls?
If you have long distance phone charges, these will apply. Many phone companies offer plans with unlimited long distance in the US, which makes it a free call. Or you may wish to dial in on a cell phone. Check your long distance plan for details.
Free Internet phone services, such as Skype, often cause interference and create static on the phone bridgeline. If you mute the line, the static is usually muted as well.
Or, you can look into long distance calling cards. Back to FAQ
